Nachhaltig leben – aber wie?

Living Sustainably – But How?

Summary

In this episode of Linguistic AlgoRhythms, Andrea and Stefanie discuss sustainability and how an environmentally conscious lifestyle can be achieved in daily life. They explore the historical origins of the concept in 18th-century forestry and explain why responsible resource management remains crucial for our planet today. The hosts weigh the benefits — such as mindfulness, better health, and long-term financial savings — against the challenges of convenience, the higher cost of organic products, and consumerist societal pressures. Through practical tips on reducing packaging waste, embracing second-hand fashion, using eco-friendly transport, and fixing items at Repair Cafés, they demonstrate that sustainable living is not about perfection, but about taking the first step.

Hello and a warm welcome to a new episode of Linguistic AlgoRhythms!

I'm delighted that you're joining us again today.

I'm sitting here in the studio while outside it's pouring with rain.

I came by bike earlier and got soaking wet, but you know what?

Es hat sich trotzdem gut angefühlt.

It still felt great.

My name is Andrea and today I have a very special guest with me: Stefanie.

Hallo Stefanie, schön, dass du da bist!

Hello Stefanie, wonderful to have you!

Stefanie

Hallo Andrea!

Hello Andrea!

Danke für die Einladung.

Thanks for the invite.

Well, you sound very energetic and motivated today despite the rain.

Andrea

Na ja, ich versuche es zumindest!

Well, I try to be!

And that brings us straight to our topic today: sustainability.

You hear that word constantly — in advertising, in politics, and even when grocery shopping.

Aber Stefanie, ganz ehrlich: Was meint man eigentlich genau mit „nachhaltig“?

But Stefanie, honestly: what does 'sustainable' actually mean?

It sounds like quite an abstract word, doesn't it?

Kannst du uns das mal erklären?

Could you explain it to us?

Stefanie

Da hast du recht, Andrea.

You're right, Andrea.

It often sounds like a complicated technical term, but the core idea is actually very human.

At its heart, sustainability means living and doing business today in a way that allows future generations — our children and grandchildren — to inherit a healthy world.

Wir dürfen also heute nicht alles verbrauchen, was die Erde uns gibt.

In other words, we shouldn't consume everything the Earth gives us all at once.

Andrea

Verstehe.

I see.

Es geht also um der Umweltschutz, richtig?

So it's about environmental protection, right?

The effort to keep nature, water, and air clean so we don't destroy everything.

Stefanie

Ganz genau.

Exactly.

Das ist ein zentraler Teil davon.

That's a central part of it.

And that also means not wasting resources — natural reserves like energy, raw materials, or water.

We need to use these resources in a way that allows them to regenerate.

Andrea

Das klingt logisch.

That makes total sense.

Like my example this morning: of course I could have taken the car to stay dry.

But I chose the bicycle so I wouldn't burn petrol.

Ist das schon ein Teil davon?

Is that already part of it?

Stefanie

Absolut!

Absolutely!

Das ist ein klassisches Alltagsbeispiel.

That's a classic everyday example.

But you know, Andrea, the concept isn't as new as many people think.

The word has a fascinating history dating back over 300 years.

Andrea

Echt jetzt?

Really?

People were already talking about sustainability 300 years ago?

There were no plastic bags or cars back then.

Stefanie

That's true, but there were forests. The term originally comes from forestry — the care and management of woodland. A man named Hans Carl von Carlowitz recognised in 1713 that you should only chop down as many trees in a forest as can grow back in the same amount of time. Otherwise, you eventually run out of timber.

Andrea

Das ist ja faszinierend.

That's fascinating.

Back then, timber was the most important raw material — what people needed for building and heating.

If timber ran out, survival was at stake.

Stefanie

Genau.

Exactly.

And today we apply that same principle to the whole planet.

It's about responsibility — the duty we have toward the environment and society.

But tell me, Andrea, how do you perceive the public debate?

I feel like opinions often diverge sharply.

Andrea

Oh yes, absolutely. I often see two extremes. On one hand, there are people demanding radical change — saying we must immediately stop flying, stop eating meat, and ideally never buy anything new. On the other hand, many people say: 'What difference does it make if I recycle my yoghurt pot when huge factories in China or the US emit so much CO2?' I often wonder myself: do small steps actually matter, or are they just a drop in the ocean?

Stefanie

Das ist eine sehr berechtigte Frage.

That's a very fair question.

While it's true that industry has an enormous impact, I'd argue that we as consumers still hold substantial power.

Not just through our own actions, but through the signal we send to policymakers and businesses.

When we all demand more sustainable options, companies have to adapt.

But of course, there are always two sides to the coin.

Andrea

Absolut.

Definitely.

Let's look closer at the pros and cons.

A clear advantage — a positive aspect — is that you often live more mindfully and healthily.

When I buy local seasonal vegetables, they taste better and I support local farmers.

Stefanie

Genau.

Right.

Und man spart oft langfristig Geld.

And you often save money in the long run.

People who repair things instead of buying new end up with more in their wallet.

But we also have to be honest about the disadvantages.

Nachhaltigkeit kann anstrengend sein.

Sustainability can be inconvenient.

Buying organic products is often more expensive, and doing the research takes time.

Andrea

Das ist der Punkt!

That's the crux of it!

We humans are often simply a bit lazy or convenience-oriented.

We like comfort and avoid extra effort.

It's simply easier not to separate rubbish or to quickly order cheap items online rather than visiting three different shops.

Stefanie

Absolut.

Exactly.

And there's often social pressure.

When all your friends fly off on holiday and you say you're staying home for the climate, you sometimes feel like an outsider.

In our consumer society, 'going without' carries very negative connotations.

Andrea

Das stimmt.

That's true.

Aber Stefanie, jetzt mal ganz praktisch.

But Stefanie, let's get practical.

You look into this topic a lot.

What does it look like in your home?

What are your personal tips for our listeners?

Stefanie

I've put together a 'Top 3' list of things that aren't too hard to implement.

Mein erster Tipp betrifft das Essen.

My first tip is about food.

Ich achte sehr auf die Verpackung.

I pay close attention to packaging.

In supermarkets, almost everything is wrapped in plastic.

I try to buy loose fruit and vegetables or bring my own cloth bags.

Das spart unglaublich viel Müll.

That avoids an incredible amount of waste.

Andrea

Das mache ich auch!

I do that too!

And I've noticed you throw away much less food because you only buy what you actually need.

Was ist dein zweiter Tipp?

What's your second tip?

Stefanie

Das Thema Kleidung.

Clothing.

Ich habe früher viel zu viel gekauft.

I used to buy way too much.

Today I try to avoid constantly chasing trends.

'Doing without' means deliberately choosing not to buy or use something even if you could.

Now I often visit second-hand shops or do clothes swaps with friends.

Das macht sogar richtig Spaß!

It's actually really fun!

Andrea

Das klingt gut.

That sounds great.

Mein persönlicher Tipp wäre die Mobilität.

My personal tip would be mobility.

I'd encourage everyone to cycle or walk more often when distances are short.

You see the city in a completely different way and do something good for your health.

Carpooling is also a great option when a car is truly needed.

Stefanie

Sehr gute Punkte!

Great points!

And my third tip is: repair instead of throwing away.

Es gibt mittlerweile in vielen Städten „Repair-Cafés“.

Many cities now have 'Repair Cafés.'

People there help you fix a broken radio or repair torn jeans.

Man muss nicht immer alles sofort neu kaufen.

You don't always have to buy new immediately.

Andrea

Das ist ein toller Ansatz.

That's a fantastic initiative.

So we've learned a lot today: from forest management 300 years ago to plastic packaging today.

Sustainability is certainly a challenge, but it also offers many opportunities for a better quality of life.

Stefanie

Ganz genau, Andrea.

Exactly, Andrea.

It's not about being perfect overnight.

Es geht darum, anzufangen.

It's about getting started.

Every step counts, no matter how small.

Andrea

Das ist ein perfektes Schlusswort.

A perfect closing thought.

We don't have to be perfect; we just need to begin.

Vielen Dank, Stefanie, für dieses inspirierende Gespräch!

Thank you so much, Stefanie, for this inspiring conversation!

It really helped make the topic much clearer.

Stefanie

Sehr gerne, Andrea.

My pleasure, Andrea.

Es hat mir auch viel Spaß gemacht!

I had a wonderful time!

Andrea
