Vivre seul : liberté ou solitude ?
Living Alone: Freedom or Loneliness?
Summary
In this episode of Linguistic AlgoRhythms, Andrea and Stefanie discuss the social trend toward living alone. The rise of single-person households in major cities is identified as one of the defining features of the 21st century. While multi-generational households once guaranteed social and financial security, today's prosperity enables the choice of living solo. The speakers weigh the advantages — self-determination, independence, flexibility, and personal growth — against the significant drawbacks, particularly the financial burden of fixed costs (the so-called 'singles tax') and the emotional risk of social isolation and loneliness. Stefanie explains, through examples like a regular Stammtisch and co-working spaces, that people living alone must be proactive to maintain a healthy balance between freedom and social connection. Bonjour Stefanie, merci d'avoir accepté notre invitation !
Hello and a warm welcome to a new episode of Linguistic AlgoRhythms! I'm Andrea, and I'm so glad you're joining us again today. We're devoting this episode to a topic that really cuts to the heart of modern society. It's about the way we live — and how that choice shapes our entire sense of life. The big question: living alone — is it the ultimate expression of freedom, or is it actually a fast track to loneliness? My guest today is Stefanie, an expert in social trends. Hello Stefanie, great that you've taken the time!
Bonjour Andrea !
Hello Andrea! Thank you so much for having me. I'm really happy to be here. This is such a timely topic. If you walk through the streets of any big city today, you increasingly see just a single name on the doorbells. The number of single-person households is practically exploding — and not just among young people.
C'est un fait marquant.
That's an important point.
Before we dive deeper: when we talk about a single-person household, we mean people who are genuinely covering the rent entirely on their own and managing daily life without a partner or flatmate, right?
Exactly, Andrea. You've put it perfectly. A single-person household is an apartment where one person manages everything alone. There's no one to share tasks with — you're your own boss, but also your own janitor.
You know, I remember my own time in a studio flat. The classic example is Sunday morning: it's completely quiet. You can stay in bed until noon, leave toast crumbs on the table, and nobody complains about the dishes in the sink. For some people, that's a dream of autonomy come true. But for others, that silence can start to feel heavy and oppressive after the third cup of coffee.
That's exactly the ambivalence we're talking about.
Those small decisions — like where to leave your shoes in the hallway or how loud to play music — are actually symbols of a much bigger shift.
We live in an age of individualism.
We now often value our own autonomy more highly than the security of belonging to a community.
But it wasn't always like this, was it?
When I think of my grandparents' stories, the idea of living alone was practically nonexistent back then.
Absolument.
Absolutely.
La norme d'antan était la maison multigénérationnelle.
Multi-generational households used to be the norm — a home where grandparents, parents, and children all lived under one roof.
Everyone supported each other, but there was almost no privacy.
On s'épaulait mutuellement, mais l'intimité était quasi nulle.
The fact that we live alone so often today is actually a luxury problem.
It's only our economic prosperity that allows us to afford an entire apartment for just one person.
In the past, living alone was often a sign of poverty or social isolation.
C'est une perspective captivante.
That's a fascinating thought.
We've essentially bought our freedom.
Mais quel tribut émotionnel payons-nous en retour ?
But what emotional price do we pay for it?
When everyone lives in their own little bubble, doesn't that change the social fabric of a city?
Tu as parfaitement raison.
You're right.
We gain self-determination — meaning the ability to make completely independent choices about our lives and our time, without asking anyone's permission.
But at the same time, we lose the daily, informal social support and connection that comes naturally with living with others.
As solo dwellers, we have to work much more actively to maintain relationships.
Let's stay with the positives for a moment. For many people, independence is the most important argument. If I understand you correctly, in this context independence means above all not being dependent on other people's moods or plans — being free from compromise.
Exactement.
Exactly. A compromise means everyone gives up a little of what they want in order to reach a common solution. In a shared flat you have to negotiate cleaning rotas or who drank the last of the milk. People living alone have total flexibility — the ability to shape their daily life spontaneously and without having to consult anyone. This enormously promotes personal development, because you're forced to face yourself. You learn who you truly are when nobody is watching.
That sounds like a great opportunity for self-discovery.
But now we need to talk about the downsides, because that's where things get difficult.
One huge topic is fixed costs.
I recently read that single people in cities like Munich or Berlin spend almost half their income on rent.
C'est la dure réalité.
That's unfortunately the reality.
Fixed costs are the expenses that arise every month regardless of how much time you spend at home — rent, electricity, internet, insurance.
Because single people bear all of these alone, people often speak of a 'singles tax.'
On the current housing market, it's an enormous financial burden.
It's almost paradoxical: you want the freedom of your own apartment, but you have to work so much to afford it that you barely have time to enjoy that freedom.
And then there's the psychological factor. You notice it most clearly when you're ill. I once had a bad bout of flu alone in my flat. There was nobody to bring me tea or pick up medicine from the pharmacy. In those moments, the desired peace and quiet can very quickly turn into social isolation.
That's a very serious point. Social isolation means having almost no contact with other people and feeling cut off from society. When it persists over a long period, we call it loneliness. It's a creeping process. You get used to the silence, perhaps become a bit set in your ways, and find it increasingly exhausting to reach out to others. The freedom then becomes a cage.
That's a stark image, but I understand exactly what you mean. Stefanie, you actually live alone yourself. How do you manage it? How do you stop yourself from going stir-crazy?
Oh, 'going stir-crazy' — that's the perfect expression! That's when you feel trapped within your own four walls and desperately need to get out. I'm very proactive about it. I make sure I have regular fixed commitments. For example, every Tuesday I go to a regular social gathering — what Germans call a 'Stammtisch.'
Une table d'habitués ?
A Stammtisch?
C'est une tradition conviviale formidable.
That sounds wonderfully traditional.
Peux-tu décrire cette habitude à nos auditeurs ?
Could you explain to our listeners what that actually is?
A Stammtisch is essentially a regular meeting of a fixed group of people at a local pub or café. You know each other, you talk about all sorts of things, and there's no real obligation except to show up. It gives my life structure. I also often work in a co-working space — a shared office where you work on your own projects but you're surrounded by people. You can go for lunch together or have a quick chat.
C'est bien là la clé !
That's the key, isn't it?
As someone living alone, you have to actively create the social contact that happens automatically in a shared flat or family.
Il faut prendre l'initiative.
You have to take the initiative.
If you just wait for the phone to ring, you've already lost.
Absolument.
Absolutely.
Cela réclame une véritable discipline sociale.
You need a certain social discipline.
You have to be honest with yourself: do I actually need the quiet tonight, or am I just avoiding the effort of meeting people?
L'équilibre est primordial.
The balance is crucial.
You can only truly enjoy the freedom of your own place if you know there's a solid social network waiting for you out there.
Before we wrap up, let's quickly recap the key concepts.
We talked about independence and flexibility — the freedom to be spontaneous.
But we also saw the flip side: the fixed costs and the risk of loneliness.
Tout à fait.
Exactly.
And we've seen that while the multi-generational household is a thing of the past, the need for community has remained the same.
It's a question of personality and life stage.
Une superbe synthèse.
What a lovely way to close.
Whether alone or with others — in the end, the most important thing is not to become isolated.
