Télétravail : liberté ou nouvelle charge mentale ?
Working from Home: Freedom or New Burden?
Summary
In this episode of Linguistic AlgoRhythms, Andrea and Stefanie discuss working from home — exploring whether it represents genuine freedom or a new kind of burden. They explain the German concept of 'presence culture' and how the pandemic forced a rapid shift in working norms. The main advantages — saving commuting time, greater flexibility, and the ability to work independently — are weighed against the downsides: loneliness, the blurring of work and private life, distractions at home, and the pressure of constant availability. Both hosts share their personal strategies: setting up a dedicated workspace, getting dressed properly for the day, and taking a short walk to mentally 'commute home.' They conclude that the future of work will likely be hybrid. Content and recording of this episode were created using Artificial Intelligence.

Hello and a warm welcome to a new episode of Linguistic AlgoRhythms!
I'm Andrea, and I'm so glad you're all tuning in again today.
We've picked a topic that really affects everyone, whether you've been working for a long time or you're just starting out in the job market.
We're talking about working from home.
Here with me in the studio today is the lovely Stefanie.
Hello Stefanie, great to have you!
Bonjour Andrea !
Hello Andrea!
Merci beaucoup pour l'invitation.
Thank you so much for having me.
Je suis ravie d'être là.
I'm really glad to be here.
And you're right — working from home is basically the number one topic of conversation at the moment.
On the train, in the supermarket, at dinner with friends — you always hear the same question: are you working from home today or do you have to go into the office?
Exactement.
Exactly.
It's almost a small revolution in our working world.
But before we dive into the debate, let's clear up the terminology a bit.
We always say 'working from home,' but in Germany there's actually a fine legal distinction between a dedicated home office setup and 'mobile working.'
Working from home usually implies a fixed desk you've set up at home.
Mobile working is even more flexible — theoretically you could sit in a park, a café, or a train and write your emails.
But for today, let's just stick with 'working from home' as the term everyone uses when they're not physically in the office.
C'est une très bonne idée.
Yes, good idea.
We're really more interested in the feeling and the daily reality of it, not complicated legal definitions.
Tout à fait.
Absolutely.
So tell us, Stefanie — what does it actually look like for you day to day?
Do you have an example of how your mornings have changed?
Oh Andrea, it's like night and day! When I think back to before — before the whole switch — my mornings were pure stress. I had to be up by six at the latest, get ready in a huge rush, eat breakfast standing up, and then sprint to the station. The worst part was always the commute — the daily journey, the time and distance between home and work. When I had to commute — making that long trip every day by car or train — I'd often be completely drained before I'd even started my first task. Delayed trains, motorway traffic jams, rain on the platform... you know how it is.
Oh, I know it only too well.
That lost time stuck in traffic can really ruin your mood.
Exactement !
Exactly! And today? Today I get up, make myself a coffee or tea at my own pace, glance out the window, and then — honestly — often sit down at my kitchen table in a cosy jumper or even pyjamas. I save two hours of commuting per day. That makes me much more flexible — meaning I can adapt my time far better to my own needs. If I want to go for a run first thing in the morning, I can now, because there's no commute to fit around.
Cela ressemble à une vraie liberté.
That really does sound like pure freedom.
But tell me, Stefanie — wasn't this actually quite difficult to achieve in Germany before?
Je me souviens que beaucoup d'employeurs étaient extrêmement sceptiques.
I remember many managers being very sceptical.
Tu as totalement raison.
You're absolutely right.
Germany was for a long time the land of the classic presence culture — a term anyone wanting to understand German working life really needs to know.
Presence culture means it was extremely important in a company for employees to be physically present.
There was a widespread belief that only if you were sitting at your desk in the office were you actually working hard.
Anyone who stayed at home was quickly labelled as lazy, or people assumed they were doing housework instead of their job.
But then 2020 arrived and suddenly there was no choice.
Offices closed and people were sent home.
Et surprise : cela a parfaitement fonctionné !
And it worked!
Work got done — often even more efficiently than before.
The old presence culture died a little that day.
That's true — the change was really radical. But I think it has a downside we need to talk about. I'm thinking especially of the end of the working day — that moment of clocking off. It's almost a quintessentially German concept: the feeling of being truly done with work and switching off completely. Before, it was clear: you closed the office door behind you, drove home, and work stayed in the office. But if my office is now my kitchen table, how do I ever properly switch off? I see the laptop at dinner; I hear the notification sounds on my phone...
That's exactly the problem. A lot of people experience this as a new kind of burden. There's no clear boundary anymore. So there are advantages and disadvantages that need to be weighed up carefully. Let's list them. What are the biggest plus points for you?
Well, as you said, the time saving is unbeatable.
Mais j'apprécie aussi énormément l'autonomie.
But I also love the independence.
When I work independently here, I don't necessarily mean being self-employed — I mean being able to plan your tasks on your own initiative.
I can focus fully for two hours without a colleague popping in and asking if I have a minute for a coffee.
You sometimes just get more done in less time.
That's true. But it's exactly that coffee with colleagues that I miss sometimes! The flip side is the loneliness. You sit alone in your flat all day. I miss the gossip from the kitchen, the shared lunch breaks. You stop noticing how your colleagues are actually doing. And then there's the blurring of private life and work — the moment when two domains overlap so much that you can no longer separate them. The living room is suddenly no longer a place of rest but a place of stress.
Oh yes, and distraction shouldn't be underestimated either.
Distraction is anything that pulls you away from the actual work.
When I'm at home I suddenly notice: oh, the laundry needs doing, or the bin is full.
And just like that you're doing household chores instead of the project report.
You need a lot of self-discipline for this — setting yourself rules and actually sticking to them, even when nobody is watching.
And do you know what I also find difficult?
L'hyperconnexion et la disponibilité permanente.
The constant expectation of being reachable — feeling that you must respond immediately to every email or message, just so the boss doesn't think you're napping on the sofa.
Being always available means you're permanently accessible to others through digital channels.
That can create enormous pressure that you simply don't have in the office, where people can actually see you're there.
Tu as parfaitement raison.
You're absolutely right about that.
But tell me, Stefanie — how do you personally handle it?
Do you have a fixed workspace in your flat, or do you really always sit at the kitchen table?
In the beginning I was everywhere — on the sofa, at the kitchen table, even in bed with the laptop. But I quickly noticed it wasn't working for me. I couldn't properly concentrate — meaning focus my full attention on just one thing. Now I've set up a little corner in the bedroom that is purely my workspace. That's really important psychologically: when I sit down there, my brain knows it's work time. And when I leave that chair, that's it — I'm done.
That's a great tip. I do something similar. I've also got into the habit of getting dressed in the morning as if I'm going out — not necessarily in a suit, but I put on a proper pair of trousers and a shirt. The tracksuit stays in the wardrobe. It helps me shift into work mode. And when I finish for the day, I often go for a quick walk around the block. That's my simulated commute home. Afterwards I feel so much freer.
That's funny — I do the same thing! A short walk works wonders for clearing your head. It's all a question of self-management. Working from home isn't something that just sorts itself out. You have to learn to handle this new freedom so it doesn't become a burden. You have to create your own structures.
C'est une très belle synthèse.
That's a lovely conclusion.
I also think we'll never fully return to the old system.
The future will probably be hybrid — a mix of a few days in the office for the social side and teamwork, and a few days at home for focused, concentrated work.
That would be the ideal solution for me. You get the best of both worlds. I genuinely like my colleagues — I just don't miss the Monday morning rush-hour traffic one bit!
On te comprend tous !
Who does?
