Pourquoi mangeons-nous sans avoir faim ?
Why Do We Eat Even When We Aren't Hungry?
Summary
Hello and a warm welcome to a new episode of Linguistic AlgoRhythms! I'm Andrea, your host, and I'm delighted that you've tuned in again today. Today we're exploring a topic that I know very well personally—and I bet many of you do too. It's the question: Why do we actually eat when our stomachs aren't rumbling at all? Why do we reach for chocolate right after finishing lunch? To shed light on this, I have an expert guest with us today. A warm welcome, Stefanie!
Bonjour Andrea !
Hi Andrea!
Merci beaucoup pour l'invitation.
Thanks so much for inviting me.
I'm excited to be here today as an expert in nutritional psychology.
This is a topic where all of us can learn to practice a bit more mindfulness with ourselves.
C'est tout à fait vrai.
That's so true.
I have to admit, Stefanie, I'm a classic creature of habit.
Take yesterday evening, for instance: I was sitting on the couch after having enjoyed a wonderful dinner, completely full.
But then I turned on a TV show and instantly got a craving for potato chips.
Ce n'était pas de la faim... alors qu'était-ce au juste ?
That wasn't hunger, that was... well, what was it, really?
That's a textbook example, Andrea. What you're describing is what we typically distinguish as 'appetite' versus true 'hunger.' Your body didn't need energy, but your brain wanted a reward. You just used the word 'habit.' A habit is something repeated so often that it happens completely automatically without conscious thought. Your brain has conditioned itself: watching television means munching on chips.
That's exactly how it feels! It's almost like a reflex. But tell me, why is our brain wired that way? Isn't that totally counterintuitive? When the gas tank is full, you shouldn't keep pumping fuel.
That makes rational sense, but we have to look back at our ancestors. Back in the Stone Age, there were no supermarkets. Whenever our ancestors found food, they had to consume as much as possible. They never knew when they'd find their next meal. The body stored that excess energy for lean times.
So I basically have a 'Stone Age brain' that thinks the world might end tomorrow and chips will become extinct?
Exactement !
Spot on! Our brains are hardwired for survival. The problem is that today, we live in an environment of absolute abundance and oversupply. An oversupply means having far more of something than we actually need. Vending machines are everywhere, fast food is on every corner, and advertisements constantly barrage us with mouthwatering images. Our ancient brain shouts, 'Grab it!', but our modern bodies have no need for those extra calories.
That's a genuine internal conflict. I notice that at work all the time too. When a colleague has a birthday and brings in cake, I take a slice even though I don't feel like it at all. I just don't want to come across as rude. That's more like social eating, right?
Precisely. That's an important aspect of the discussion. Some believe you should strictly only eat when physically hungry. But food is also cultural and provides social bonding. Sharing a meal with friends fosters a sense of belonging. It strengthens community ties. That's the upside. The downside, however, is that we frequently lose touch with our sense of satiety. Satiety is the physical signal from our body saying, 'Stop, I'm full now; I don't need anything else.' When we persistently ignore that signal just to be polite or fit in, problems arise over time.
You hit the nail on the head. I see that in myself: when I'm stressed, I eat far more. I call it 'stress eating.' Yesterday, for example, I had so much trouble with a work project. In the evening, I devoured almost an entire pack of cookies just to comfort myself.
That's the classic definition of 'emotional eating.' We use food to soothe unpleasant emotions or distract ourselves from underlying problems. When you distract yourself, you focus your attention elsewhere so you don't have to feel the discomfort or stress. In your case, that cookie wasn't nourishment—it was comfort. Eating it releases dopamine in the brain, functioning like a quick reward that delivers temporary relief.
But that's really a trap, isn't it? You get a fleeting dopamine rush, but ten minutes later guilt kicks in because you know it wasn't healthy.
That's the exact vicious cycle. And it often triggers intense cravings. Have you ever experienced that sudden, overwhelming urge to eat something specific—usually sugary or greasy? It can consume your thoughts.
Oh yes, all too well! In those moments, saying 'no' feels nearly impossible. It's so hard to abstain. When you abstain from something, you consciously choose to forgo it even though you crave it. But with fierce cravings, you feel almost powerless.
That's completely normal. In those moments, our prefrontal control center simply gets overpowered. That's why building strategies to resist temptation is so crucial. Resisting means staying grounded and pushing back against an impulsive urge. It's a skill you can cultivate, but it takes patience.
Alright Stefanie, let's get down to brass tacks. What can I actually do? I don't want to lose the battle against my own brain every single night. Do you have practical tips for me and our listeners?
Gladly! The first step is mindfulness. Next time you catch yourself reaching for the snack cabinet, pause for a moment. Ask yourself: 'Am I genuinely hungry in my stomach, or am I just bored or stressed?' Often, that single moment of pause is enough to break the automatic loop.
Prendre un instant pour écouter son corps ! Et si l'envie persiste malgré tout ?
That makes total sense. Take a breath and check in with your body. But what if the craving for chocolate persists anyway?
Then try shifting the environment. Drink a tall glass of water—the brain often confuses thirst with hunger. Or take a brisk walk outside. Physical movement helps burn off stress hormones without taking in extra calories. Another golden rule: never grocery shop hungry! Shopping on an empty stomach ensures your cart gets filled with treats you won't be able to resist at home later.
That's a fantastic point. If the cookies aren't sitting in the pantry in the first place, I don't have to battle myself. But what about 'mindful indulgence' that people often talk about? When I do choose to treat myself, what's the best way?
That's a wonderful concept: treating yourself or snacking for pleasure. When you do choose to indulge, do it intentionally! Sit down at a table, turn off the TV, put your phone away, and focus solely on the flavors and textures. When you savor mindfully, you notice much faster that a single square of chocolate is completely sufficient to satisfy the brain's reward center.
That's so true. When I snack mindlessly while reading emails, I barely even register how much I've devoured. I just wolf it down.
Exactement.
Exactly, and your brain doesn't even register that you've eaten. That's why it demands more soon after. We need to relearn how to process our meals—not just in our stomachs, but mentally. Processing here means consciously registering: 'I am savoring something delicious right now,' and letting that register in your awareness.
I see, Stefanie. It really comes down to our relationship with ourselves. It's not about strict deprivation, but about reclaiming conscious control.
Spot on, Andrea. It's about genuine freedom. The freedom to say 'yes' when you genuinely want to savor a slice of cake at grandma's, and 'no' when you're just reaching for chips out of workplace stress. We should view our body as a partner, not an adversary.
What a lovely takeaway. I'm definitely putting this into practice tonight when I sit on the couch. Take a deep breath first, and check what I truly need. Perhaps it's not a snack at all, but simply a moment of peace and quiet.
That's the perfect place to start.
I wish you and all our listeners great success with it!
